Mattel, a giant in its industry, catapulted the success of talking dolls by producing Baby Chatty Cathy Dolls. Baby Chatty Cathy Dolls were created in 1959 and sold in the 1960s. The original Baby Chatty Cathy Dolls came with eleven expressions; a random phrase was activated by the pulling of its string. Girls of all ages were captivated by these dolls and many still collect them today.
The Original Chatty Cathy Dolls had soft vinyl faces; their twenty-inch long bodies were made of vinyl. It has blonde hair, blue eyes and came with two sets of clothing. The first set consisted of a red sun suit, an apron, a white voile over-skirt, white socks and red shoes. The second clothing set was a blue dress, white top, a hoop under-skirt, white socks, blue shoes and panties. The Original Chatty Cathy Doll came well equipped with a shoehorn, book and a warranty card attached to the wrist of the Baby Chatty Cathy Dolls.
It did not take long for different editions of the Baby Chatty Cathy Dolls to surface. Mattel came out with a brunette Baby Chatty Cathy Doll in 1962 and followed up with auburn haired Baby Chatty Cathy Doll in 1963. In 1962 and 1963, Mattel also introduced African-American Dolls that had brown shaded skin. Baby Chatty Cathy Dolls expanded and other revisions were made which produced, Charmin` Chatty, Tiny Chatty Brother, and Singin` Chatty (amongst others).
A metal coil activated phonograph brought Chatty Cathy Dolls to life with expressions like, I love you, Please brush my hair, and Tell me a story. In 1963, more expressions were added giving Chatty Cathy Dolls a sum of eighteen expressions. The voice that was recorded for the Original Chatty Cathy Doll was that of June Foray who is known for voicing characters on the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.
